The temple of Goddess Bari Patan Devi is among the most sacred Hindu temples. Bari Patan Devi temple is a very popular divine place for Hindu pilgrims. This Holy shrine is located in Patna, Bihar and is considered as one of the oldest temples of Patna. This temple is dedicated to Patan Devi who is also referred to as Maa Patneshwari. Bari Patan Devi temple is regarded among the 51 Siddha Shakti Pithas in India. In this sacred temple, there are stone idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Kali, Bhairav and Goddess Saraswati in black color. Some people believe that ‘Patna’ got its name from Bari Patan Devi temple. It is said that this holy shrine is an abode of Goddess Durga. This magnificent temple filled with devotional aura is worth visiting. Many devotees come every year to get the blessings from Goddess. Pilgrims get overwhelmed by having the ‘darshan’ of Goddess.

It is believed that the father of Sati, Prajapati Daksh, once organized a Yajna. He invited every God but did not invite his son-in-law, Shiva. When Sati got to know about it, she went to her father’s home and she couldn’t find any seat for her husband Shiva. She felt very insulted and decided to die. When Lord Shiva got to know about the end of Sati’s life, he got very angry and in sorrow, he took the dead body of Sati on his shoulder and started performing Tandava round the three worlds (Triloka). The other Gods were horrified and they all requested to Lord Vishnu to interfere in this matter. Lord Vishnu tried to follow the Shiva cleverly and he started to cut the

pieces from the dead body of Sati. Wherever the body parts of Sati fell down, that place became Mahapitha. It is believed that some portion of Sati’s right thigh and her pat (cloth) fell down near Chowk and Maharajganj through which Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, Maa Saraswati came into existence. It is said that the pat which fell at Chowk and Maharajganj is the reason behind the name of Bari Patan Devi. Some people also believe that Patna has got its name from the temple.

Patna is among the oldest cities of India and its ancient name was Patliputra. Bari Patan Devi temple has added more glory to this city. Every day, many devotees visit this holy shrine to get the blessings of Bari Patan Devi.
