Mathura is among the most essential pilgrimages for devotees of Krishna. Shri Krishna was born in Mathura. Alongwith Mathura, Nandgaon Barsana is also the most prominent and venerable place of Radha Rani which is located about 8.5 km away to the north of Barsana and north-east of Mathura. It is believed that Radha Rani spent her childhood in Barsana. Nandgaon is also known as the birth place of Lord Krishna and home of Lord Krishna’s foster father Nand, in whose memory a roomy temple stands on the top of the hill. Pan Sarovar is situated near to the Nand village and is considered as one of the foremost famous lakes in Braj.

Nandgaon temple was perhaps built in the middle of the 12th century. It consists of an open nave with singing group and sacrarium beyond. This prominent place is named after Krishna’s foster father Nand ji and mother Yashoda ji who had their eternal residence built at this place after stirring from Gokul. Shri Krishna ji lived in Nandgaon village along with his foster parents during his Kumar-Lilas (Youth Pastimes). When Kansa sent some evil spirits to create disturbances and to kill Krishna, Nand Raeji decided to leave Gokul and after staying for sometime at Chhatikara, Dig and Kamyavan, he shifted to Nandgaon.

This famous Village of Nandgaon is located on the apex of Nandishwar hill. Nandraeji, the king of the cowherd men built his palace at the top of the Nandishvar hill.  Nandishvar means ‘the lord of Nandi.’ It is also another name of lord Shiva. Thus, the name Nandishvar came into existence from the personality of Lord Shiva who is considered to dwell here in the form of hill delighting in the transcendental leisure of Lord Krishna.

The main attractions of Nandgaon are the two black marble images of Krishna and Balarama. They are together in three-fold bending forms, holding flutes, on their left to right and two tall statues of Yashoda and Nanda Maharaja. The Deities in this temple were originally installed by Vajranabha. It is believed that the Deities in this temple were found by Sanatana Gosvami in a cave at the hill. On the ceiling of the inner dome of this temple, there are many paintings depicting Krishna’s pastimes.

Nandgaon is considered as one of the sub-forests or Upvans of Vrindavan. It is the place where the father (Parjanya) of Nand Raeji lived along with his family earlier, but because of the terror caused by Keshi demon, he moved to Gokul. Nandgaon is having many temples dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Center of a paved courtyard is surrounded by a lofty wall which commands a fantastic view of the Bharatpur hill. Nandgaon is a religious place due to its association with the lord Krishna. It is believed that the traces of Krishna’s childhood, mentioned in Granthas, can be found here. You can feel the spiritual aura in this holy shrine. One must visit Nandgaon to get blessings from Shri Krishna.
