INTRODUCTION

It’s hard to say when I first began keeping a journal, but it was probably in high school. I remember spending nights avoiding my homework, writing and doodling in my diary. I never wanted to reveal too much for fear someone would read it, so I always held back a little bit and expressed serious thoughts and feelings through random doodles and drawings, only hinting at the big stuff with a few words. Drawing made me feel less vulnerable than writing out all of the details of my days, and creating those drawings helped me decompress. Handwriting as an art form is an expression of oneself, and I have a deep appreciation for how different writing utensils can alter my script. I have always loved the act of simply writing words—stringing them together in various shapes and sizes or using them to create abstract patterns. The words don’t actually need to say anything. Writing words or single letterforms in groupings—more like stream of consciousness thoughts—has always been a fluid and calming exercise for me. In college I had sketchbooks filled with random writings of patterned words alongside small drawings. I would photocopy these to use in collage work. The sketchbook I used for class notes and planning how I would solve design projects was the most precious thing in my schoolbag. My husband even proposed to me in one of my journals. When I became a mother, I filled journals with our boys’ first words and milestones. I keep travel journals on every trip we take, and I encourage my kids to always have a blank book in their bags as well. There is something about turning the pages of a book—this compact object that contains days, or months, worth of artwork and thoughts, transporting us to another place and time—that has always been so satisfying to me.

As the years passed, I noticed that the drawings were disappearing from the pages of my journals. As my life got busier with work and family, I spent less and less time drawing. Months turned into years, and eventually I felt as if I could no longer draw. I had spent more than eighteen years working as a graphic designer, and one day I realized that I was desperate for a creative outlet free from computer screens and technology. When I had our boys, I was running a successful design business, and I continued to work throughout their young years. I somehow balanced work and being Mom, but by the time they were in school full time, I knew the commercial design work wasn’t scratching my creative itch. The thought of sitting at the computer for eight hours a day became daunting. So I began to look for a new creative hobby that could enhance my days. But where to begin and what to do? These were scary questions, and I felt that the best place to start was in one of my trusted journals. My husband encouraged me by saying, “You used to draw more. The talent is there, you just have to find it again.”

So I made a commitment to include some drawing practice on each page of my journal. I had no idea what would happen, but I began to practice. I figured there was no safer place than inside my own private journal to relearn how to draw by hand. After a few months of drawing patterns, letterforms, birds, and food, I gained confidence. At that point I decided not to just draw random sketches, but to use the pages to draw a true record of my life. I thought, Instead of writing out my day for my journaling practice, why not illustrate it?

I checked my mailbox at least five times today, and finally, both the book and sketchbook arrived!! I have spent the evening reading Samantha Dion Baker’s beautiful, helpful, and inspirational book!

I have only recently begun following Samantha Dion Baker on Instagram, and I was immediately hooked. I have completed three Draw Your Day sketches in a watercolor sketch book, posted them on IG, and received a comment from the author! 💕 I was pretty excited.

I am only a beginning sketcher, but I love her book and the idea of capturing our daily lives with words and drawings!! It’s a great book!!

I loved “Draw Your Day”. I read it from cover to cover including the journal pages. For me, as an artist with experience, I was delighted to find bits here and there that either were new or reminded me of things I sometimes forget. Example, facial proportions, rule of odds (using 3 or 5 objects). The chapter on inspiration was so helpful to me. I know it’s a common problem for creative people. I also found the materials section to be helpful. I have much of what is recommended but not everything. I’ve been doing hand lettering the same way for 30 years and loved learning about some new pens to try! The chapter on “now it’s time to draw” was well done and points beginners and professionals to look for YouTube videos and specific how-to books if you want. The sentence about you don’t have to draw; just put dots and words on the page was particularly insightful and encouraging. I think “Draw Your Day” belongs on the bookshelf or night table of anyone who aspires to express himself or herself in words and/or pictures, at any level of expertise.

I''ve been following Samantha''s instagram journaling for years and couldn''t wait for her book to arrive. It is as inspiring as it is practical. The images are beautiful, but as importantly, the book is full of helpful advice - everything from suggestions on how to get started, tips on layout, color, and design, and tools to help you begin a practice of an illustrated journal. Inspired by Sam''s instagram feed, our family has kept a "family journal" for years - but this book has helped us take it to a new level. We can''t wait to play around with her suggestions for how to "draw text" and add collage to our pages. Even my youngest who can''t read yet, loves just looking at the sumptuous illustrations. What I love most about this book though, is that I''m not an artist, and I will never be able to draw or design as well as Samantha, but she provides entry points for whatever your skill level is, and cheers you on throughout - inspiring and encouraging, never making it seem like this is something only artists can do.

Save your money and spend it on something else. Inspiring? Are you kidding? This is yet another self-indulgent book about the author. The focus is really not on the reader and offers very little substance on how to make drawing YOUR day relevant. I found the artwork boring, and there was no attempt to show other styles of artwork for inspiration. There were not a lot of ideas - the most substantive one being exactly what the title is: Draw your day. So...yeah...thanks for that -but I would not have parted with my hard-earned cash if I had known that was all I would be getting.

I have been following Samatha Dion Baker on instagram for quite a while and love her journal pages and the glimpses into her creative day. So when this book came out I knew I had to have it and it is lovely! The book itself is a great size with thick, creamy paper that feels wonderful. The content is less a how to and more an engaging pep talk on how to get started with lots of images from her own sketchbooks to serve as examples and inspiration. The writing is open and down to earth and is quite relaxing to read. I would recommend this as a great starting point for someone looking to get into sketch journaling or travel journaling!

I''ve been following Samantha Dion Baker''s work on Instagram for years now and pre-ordered this book as soon as she let us know it was out. I read the entire book the first weekend I received it and was so touched by the thoughtfulness, encouragement and helpful tips put into this book. It was a great blend of Samantha''s personal journey, why the daily drawing has impacted her life, what it means to her family, and how she can sometimes secretly capture memories and remember them years later for her and her children to remember some day.

This book was especially wonderful because she focused on how anyone could benefit. You don''t have to be an experienced artist, writer or journalist. It doesn''t have to be beautiful or shared with the world. The point is that everyone''s daily life - no matter how routine, mundane or seemingly boring can reveal moments of wonder, joy, small pleasures through a PRACTICE of looking each day. It reminded me that life is happening now, and the small moments add up (like compound interest) to create our own personal journey.

Such a simple and lovely book, but the meaning behind it is POWERFUL and fantastic. Thank you Sam for sharing your heart and your pages with all of us.

Love LOVE this book. I had been meaning to improve upon my art this year but severely lacked direction. This book, while not a solution, is definitely a step in the right direction. The author writes with tenderness and emotion about her own journey towards regular journaling and drawing practice. It lays a great foundation about why and how to go about creating a meaningful daily art journal and its many benefits. Following this, i finally found the courage to start my own journal and am already on my 5th day. I cant wait to return to it tonight. It is helping me loosen up and enjoy the process of drawing, rather than fear it. Surely that is a good thing. Highly recommended.

The introduction was like reading a parallel life - feeling that I''d lost the ability to draw. Have tried several books thinking they would help reignite my confidence and am sure this will do the trick. At school I was always an A+ student in art but was taught that everything had to be perfect which I think could have been the problem over the years. That and working full time while raising a family. Unless you are absolutely disciplined, refuse to become drowned in domesticity and save a little of each day for yourself, confidence diminishes if not vanishes altogether. This book is clearly written, the sketches are beautiful and prove that everyday things can be important and beautiful enough to record. Practise, practise, practise is the key. The author''s advice is hugely helpful - reading it opens your eyes to the things around you, however unimportant they may be considered otherwise - fallen leaves, the spots on a ladybird, cloud formation, nature in season, a cup of coffee, a mug of cocoa - they''re all worth recording. For me, simple the best way to keep a journal. My best art book purchase yet and one I''ve read from cover to cover.
