Brihadeeshwara Temple (Thanjavur Tamil Nadu ), which is located in Tanjavur, considered as one of the finest temples of South India. This temple was built by Raja Chola Emperor, Raja Raja I (985-1013 AD), the Great Chola King. This is the Chola dynasty’s finest role to Dravidian art. This beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thanjavur Brihadeeshwara Temple is a beautiful example for the Architectural masterwork of Chola Rule in South India. It is unique to have the tallest tower about 216 ft over the sanctum sanctorum unlike the other temples. The construction of this temple is really unique. The vimanam, acknowledged as Dakshina Meru, soar high while the
gopuram remains deeded. The pyramid-shaped, 64.8-metre-tall and 14-tier vimanam rises from a plaza base and is topped by a vast monolithic cupola weighing 81.3 tonnes. The shadow of the cupola never falls on the ground. The complex within its interior wall measures about 500 feet x 250 feet. The walls of the chamber are decorated with the wall paintings of Nayak and Chola periods.

Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple is the fact that in the south, towers or Gopurams at the entry to the four sides of the outer walls or prakarams are of large height; the central tower or Vimana over the sanctum sanctorum is usually eclipse by the height of the Gopurams. But at Tanjore, the major temple rises on top of the Gopurams as seen in many temples of Orissa. The temple was finished within twelve years and the Kumbhabhishekam was completed on the 20th day of the 26th year (1011 AD), the Shivalinga was established in its place by the Adi Saivas.
